During the Edo period, there were strict legal regulations regarding the handling of fire. Even amidst these circumstances, the reason why the handheld
fireworks festival was permitted at Suwa Shrine is because it was a post town
where a checkpoint was established. It is surmised that this also served to show appreciation toward the local residents who guarded the checkpoint, as well as
to address their grievances.
Prior to the event, an announcement was made that, between the handheld
fireworks and rapid-fire fireworks, numbered tickets to get the handheld
fireworks tubes used on the day would be distributed free of charge to those
who want it. According to a YouTube video I watched, I heard that we had to
pay to get the handheld fireworks, but perhaps it was because of the bad
weather and the small number of spectators. Well, since I watched it in such
terrible conditions, I definitely want to take it home as a souvenir. I don't know if it was because there were few spectators or few other people interested, but I
was able to acquire it easily.
On the back of the numbered ticket, it was noted that this tube is a lucky charm, believed to offer benefits such as warding off evil and misfortune, ensuring good health, and bringing prosperity to one’s business.
After a short break, the second half of the aerial fireworks began. The highlight was advertised as the rapid-fire fireworks. As a melancholic yet upbeat pop song began to play, countless colorful, linear fireworks were suddenly launched into the sky. In time with the music, streaks of fireworks illuminate the
pitch-black sky.
In Japan, these rapidly fired, successive fireworks are called "star mine." In principle, regardless of the form or type of fireworks, a "star mine" is understood to be a fireworks display that is launched continuously within 3 seconds.
In the first half, linear fireworks were launched into the sky. In the second half, these were accompanied by fireworks that burst with a pause of three seconds or more. These are the type we typically associate with the term "aerial
fireworks". But when these are fired in rapid, continuous succession, they
become what is known as a "star mine."
With the fireworks display now over, I immediately went to receive the handheld fireworks tubes. I asked the staff member under the tent, from whom I had received my numbered ticket, "where can I pick up the item?", then crossed the waterlogged plaza toward the area where the cylinders were lined up.
The cylinder likely weighs over 10 kilograms. When I actually held it, it felt quite heavy. I find it impressive to think that they were walking through a downpour while holding this. The scent of burnt gunpowder drifted from the central hole.

Yugawara Station, I was surprised to find that the Tokaido Line had come to a
