ここは一つ目の”花魁帯舞”ブースである。
真紅の帯を纏い、無数の金魚が遊泳する巨大鉢は、怪しく圧倒的な妖艶美を醸し出している。この鉢の作品名が”花魁”である。背後に灯る真っ赤な提灯が、江戸情緒をさらに引き立てていた。
swimming goldfish, radiates an alluring and overwhelming beauty. The title of
this bowl is "Oiran (Courtesan in Edo era)". Bright red lanterns glowing in the
background further enhance the atmosphere of the Edo period charm.
During the mid-Edo period, goldfish farming became popular, and as goldfish
江戸時代中期に金魚の養殖が盛んになり、庶民にも手が届くようになると、金魚のペット・ブームが到来した。前記事にて紹介したように、最初は陶器で飼育する「上見」であった。だが、風鈴職人がガラスの”金魚玉”を作るようになると、横からも下からも眺めることができるようになった。
became affordable for ordinary people, a goldfish pet boom ensued. As I
mentioned in the previous article, goldfish were initially kept in ceramic vessels and viewed from above ("uwami"). However, once wind-chime artisans began
crafting glass goldfish bowls ("Kingyo-dama"), it became possible to observe
the fish from the sides and below as well.
Because these bowls were easily portable, courtesans also became captivated by goldfish. Due to the wide variety of colors and patterns, they sometimes kept goldfish that looked exactly like the designs on their own kimonos. Records

from that time apparently indicate that they likened the goldfish, which could
only survive within its bowl, to their own situation, unable to leave the red-light
district. Below is a link to a site featuring the painting "Goldfish Play ("Kingyo
Asobi")" by Kitagawa Utamaro, which depicted courtesans with goldfish.
「”提灯リウム”ブース＋紫陽花」では、天井を紫陽花が埋め尽くし、その合間に照明を内に灯した番傘が下がっていた。番傘に明かりは良く映える。空間全体が、紫陽花の代表的な色、”紫”に染まっていた。At the "Chochin-rium (Lantern-rium)" booth featuring hydrangeas, the ceiling
was completely covered in the flowers. Interspersed among them were
"bangasa (traditional oil-paper umbrellas)", each illuminated from within,
hanging down. Traditional Japanese umbrellas and lights go well together. The entire space was bathed in the color of purple, the quintessential color of
hydrangeas.
朱色の屋根の社の下に丸いガラス鉢が設置され、金魚が泳いでいる。この鉢は提灯に見立てたものとのことであった。
Beneath the vermilion-roofed shrine, a round glass bowl is set up, and goldfish are swimming in it. Apparently, these bowls were designed to resemble a paper lantern.
斜めに切った竹は、日本の伝統文化が漂う所ではよく目にする。その形の水槽が輪を描くのは、”金魚の竹林”ブースである。円柱を照らす光は白い。その分、金魚の特有の華やかな体色が一層引き立っていた。
Bamboo cut at an angle is a common sight in settings that exude traditional Japanese culture. The area where the aquariums of that shape form a circle
was the "Goldfish Bamboo Forest" booth. The light illuminating the cylinder was white. This made the goldfish's distinctive, vibrant colors stand out even more.
中央には紫陽花のオブジェが立っており、その下の平たい丸い水槽では小振りな金魚が泳いでいる。竹林と共に、左右を眺めながら周遊できる作りになっていた。
In the center area, an object adorned with hydrangeas stood, and in the flat, round tank below it, small goldfish swam. The layout here allowed visitors to
walk around while viewing the bamboo forest-style aquariuma tanks and the
shallow tank on either side.
再び巨大な金魚鉢に遭遇した。ここは”天空リウム”ブースと銘打ってある。巨大鉢の周囲を、ミニチュアの鉢が囲んでいる。照明の色彩が七つの色に順に移ろっていくと、それにつれて同じ物を眺め続けている側の印象も移ろっていくのが優美である。
I came across the huge goldfish bowl again. This area was named the "Tenku-rium (Sky-rium)" booth. Miniature bowls surrounded the giant one. As
the lighting colors shifted sequentially through seven different colors, the
impression on the observer, who continued to gaze upon the same object, also shifted accordingly. It was so elegant.
”花魁花舞２「金魚×花の優美」”ブースでは、藤の花が天井を埋め尽くし、花房が金魚鉢の縁付近まで垂れ下がっている。点在する金魚鉢も、先ほどよりは若干サイズが大きい。「花に囲まれる没入空間を楽しんでいただきたい」が、企画者側の意図である。
At the "Oiran Hana-mai 2: The Elegance of Goldfish and Flowers" booth,
wisteria blossoms filled the ceiling, with flower clusters hanging down toward
nearly to the rims of the goldfish bowls. The bowls scattered throughout the
space were slightly larger than the ones I saw earlier. The organizers' intention was "We want you to enjoy an immersive space surrounded by flowers."
こちらは回廊ではなく広い空間なので、鉢の周囲に人が集中することがあまりない。撮影やら何やらで、何かにつけて他の訪問者を気に掛ける必要性がほとんどなく、気楽に鑑賞することができた。
This was a spacious area rather than a corridor, so people rarely crowded around the bowls. I was able to view the exhibits at my leisure, without having
to worry about things like avoiding capturing other visitors in my photos and
movies or being a nuisance to others.
愈々フィナーレ、”金魚蒐集”ブースに至る。
Finally, I arrived at the "Goldfish Collection" booth.
ここでは円筒を輪切りにした水槽を壁に埋め込んでいる。それぞれの水槽にはなかなかお目に罹れない珍種を収めているらしく、種類の特徴に合わせた花を装飾してアート風に展示されていた。ここでも巧みな照明技術を発揮し、色彩の変化によって多様な趣きを演出していた。
Here, cylindrical tanks cut into a ring shape were embedded in the wall. Each tank housed a rare species seldom seen elsewhere. They were displayed in an artistic style, adorned with flowers chosen to complement the characteristics of each species. Here, too, skillful lighting techniques were employed to create a
variety of moods through shifting colors.
