熱海の前には、京都に約17年住んでいた。雪景色と言うのは気象状況の気紛れによるものなので、見ようと思って見ることができるものではない。だが、住んでいれば、降雪のタイミングで、自由に雪の金閣寺を眺めに出掛けることができた。
Before Atami, I had lived in Kyoto for about 17 years. As snow scenery is a
result of fickle weather conditions, so it's not something you can see just by 
wanting to. However, if I lived there, I could freely go out and see the 
snow-covered Kinkaku Temple when it snowed.

今回は、熱海である。地中に温泉が流れているため、地面が温かく、基本的に海沿いの市街地に雪が積もることはない。だが、起床して窓の外を眺めてみると、まるで雪国のような情景が広がっていた。熱海に住んで、初めて見た景色である。
This time, I was in Atami. As hot springs flow underground, the ground is warm, so snow generally doesn't pile up in coastal urban areas. However, when I woke up and looked out the window, the scene before me was like a snowy country. It was the first time I'd seen such a view since living in Atami.
1月の下旬から、熱海は桜と梅の開花を同時に鑑賞できる貴重な時期である。これは見逃してはいけないと、慌てて完全防寒をして外出した。
From late January, it is a rare time when we can see both cherry blossoms and plum blossoms blooming at the same time in Atami. I thought I couldn't miss 
this, so I hurried out fully dressed in complete winter clothing.

まずは、糸川の熱海桜の様子を拝見する。桜の枝々には、はるかに想像を超えた雪が堆積していた。桜花は最早、空中で雪に埋もれている。
First, I took a look at the Atami cherry blossoms along Itokawa River. There was far more snow piled up on the cherry blossom branches than I had imagined. 
The cherry blossoms were already buried in the snow in mid-air.
海沿いのデッキにも足を延ばしてみる。床が木製なので、雪で却って滑るではと危惧したのだろうか。誰も足を踏み入れていない、綺麗な新雪のままであった。積もった雪を踏みしめてみる。水分が多いようでしっかり固まるので、滑ることはなかった。
I took a stroll to the deck along the sea. Maybe people worried that the wooden floor would be slippery in the snow. No one had stepped on there. So, It was 
still beautiful, fresh snow.　 I tried stepping on the piled-up snow. It seemed to 
have a lot of moisture, so it hardened well and I didn't slip.

手摺りから海中を覗いてみるものの、生物の気配がない。
I peered into the sea from the handrail, but there's no sign of any life. I peered 
into the sea of harbor from the handrail, but there was no sign of any living 
creatures.

先日、川奈を潜った際に聞いたインストラクターから聞いた話である。水温が１３度以下が１週間ほど続くと、熱帯系の魚、ソラスズメダイなどが死滅してしまい、殺風景になってしまうらしい。果たして、現在の川奈はどうであろうか。
I heard this story from an instructor when I was diving in Kawana the other day. 
If the water temperature stayed below 13 degrees for about a week, almost 
tropical fishes such as the blue damselfish would die and the area would 
become desolate. So what is the current Kawana like now.
さらに進み、サンビーチを訪れる。砂浜がこれほど白化粧している景色を、初めて見た。波打ち際だけが、積雪を縁取ったように茶色い。
I continued on and visited Sun Beach. It's the first time I've seen such a white 
sandy beach. Only the water's edge is brown, as if the sand flamed the snow.

点々とした足跡が幾筋も伸びている。降り積もった新雪を踏みしめたくなるのは、人の心の常であろう。
There were numerous scattered footprints stretching out. It's human nature to 
want to step on freshly fallen snow.

サンビーチの南には、江戸時代に上の汚職に対して正義を貫いた釜鳴屋平七とその妻の像が立っている。それぞれに寄り添うように、二本の熱海桜が佇んでいる。夫婦を、雪の冷たさから庇護しているのだろうか。自ら雪をしっかりと被っていた。
At the south of Sun Beach, a statue of Kamanariya Hyoshichi and his wife 
stood. He stood up for justice against corruption among the upper classes in the Edo period. Two Atami cherry trees stood as if snuggling against each statue. 
Perhaps it protected the couple from the cold snow. The cherry trees were 
tightly covered in snow.
