毎年4月最初の週末に、ダイビングフェアが池袋のサンシャインで開催される。そのついでに、必ず池袋サンシャイン水族館の特別展を覗いてくるのが恒例となっている。今年はどうした意図か、『残念な生き物展』であった。
A diving fair is held at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro every year on the first 
weekend of April. While I'm there, it's become a tradition for me to always stop 
by and check out the special exhibition at the Ikebukuro Sunshine Aquarium. 
For some reason, this year's event was the "Exhibition of Disappointing 
Creatures."

残念な生き物については、書籍が出版されている。そこから選りすぐった”残念な生き物”に出会うことができた。なお、ここに集まった生物には”残念レベル”が設定されている。解説と合わせてみていくと、さらに楽しめるであろう。
Books about "disappointing creatures" have previously been published. I was 
able to encounter a selection of these "disappointing creatures" drawn from the works. Furthermore, a "disappointment level" has been assigned to the 
creatures gathered here. You will likely enjoy the experience even more if you 
view them alongside the accompanying explanations.
”ハリセンボン”　”Porcupinerfish”

敵が襲ってくると、海水を体内一杯に吸い込んで体を膨らませる。しかも体表には鱗が変化した無数の棘が立つ。これでは捕食できないと相手は諦めるが、こうなってしまうと泳げもしないし食事もできなくなってしまうのが、残念である。しかも、空気を体内に入れてしまうとうまく吐き出すことができず、逆さになって浮いたままになり、死亡してしまうこともあると言う。
When attacked by an enemies, it inhales a large amount of seawater to inflate 
its body. Furthermore, countless spines—transformed scales—bristle across its surface. So, the predators give up on catching the prey in this state, but 
unfortunately, it can neither swim nor eat. Moreover, if air gets into its bodies, it may not be able to exhale it properly, causing them to float upside down and 
potentially die.

京都の店で飼っていた。眼が良く、水槽内から外が見えるようで、人影が近づくと、餌をくれると思って寄ってきた。フグ類は、目がクリクリしていて視線が動くので、こちらを窺っている様子がよくわかる。それが可愛らしい。
I kept it at my bar in Kyoto. It has good eyesight and seems able to see outside the tank; whenever a person's silhouette approached, it would swim over, 
expecting to be fed. Pufferfish have large, round eyes that move around, 
making it clear it was watching us—which is adorable.
”オオバクチヤモリ”　”Spotted fish-scale gecko”

トカゲは尻尾を掴まれると、「自切」という自分でしっぽを切る行動で身を守る。だが、オオバクチヤモリが自切するのは、体表の鱗である。尻尾ほどは損傷が少ないので効率的な生体防御に思えるが、鱗がなくなれば当然、丸裸になる。そのため、新しい鱗が生えるまでの数週間、天敵に見付からぬよう、じっと隠れて暮らさねばならない。そこに残念さがある。
When a lizard is grabbed by its tail, it defends itself by performing an action 
called "autotomy," in which it cuts off its own tail. However, what the spotted fish-scale gecko sheds is the scales on its body surface. While this seems like an 
efficient biological defense mechanism as it causes less damage than cutting 
off the tail, it naturally leaves the creature completely naked once its scales are gone. For this reason, it must remain in hiding for several weeks until new 
scales grow, so as not to be discovered by natural predators. That is the 
unfortunate part.
”ホウボウ”　”Spiny red gurnard”

広げると美しい大きな胸鰭を持っている。その下には、胸鰭の筋が変化した3本の足があり、これを使って海底を歩くことができる不思議な魚である。足は味を感知できるセンサーになっており、これで砂の中の獲物を探している。
When spread out, it has beautiful, large pectoral fins. Beneath them are three 
leg-like appendages—modified fin rays—that allow this unusual fish to walk 
along the sea floor. Its legs serve as sensors capable of detecting taste, which it uses to search for prey in the sand.

その特徴的な胸鰭は天敵が現れた際の威嚇用であるのだが、あまりの大きさに素早く逃げることができず、却ってそれ故に天敵に捕獲されてしまうこともあるのが残念である。
The distinctive pectoral fins serve to intimidate natural predators, but 
unfortunately, their sheer size prevents quick escape, sometimes resulting in 
the fish being captured instead.

深海魚だが、冬の水温が低い時期になると伊豆の川奈でも時々観察できる。けったいな動きと意外な美しさを併せ持つ、魅力あふれる海の生き物の一つである。
Although it is a deep-sea fish, it can occasionally be observed at Kawana in Izu Peninsula during the winter months when water temperatures are low. It is a 
fascinating marine creature that combines peculiar movements with unexpected beauty.
”チンアナゴ”　”Spotted garden-eel”

アナゴにしては、可愛い丸顔をしている。身体の上半分だけを砂から水中に出し、潮の流れに乗ってくるプランクトンを捕食している。餌を食べる時は、体を真っ直ぐに伸ばす。
For a conger eel, it has a cute, round face. It leaves only the upper half of its 
body above the sand and feeds on plankton carried by the ocean currents. 
When eating, it stretches its body out straight.

カスミアジなどの天敵が現れると、ひょっと素早く全身を砂の中に引っ込める。憶病なので、一度警戒心を抱いてしまうと、なかなか穴から顔を出してこない。あまりに長い時間、穴の中で怯えていると、気付かずに餓死してしまうこともあるのが残念な所である。
When a natural predator like a bluefin trevally appears, it quickly withdraws its 
entire body into the sand. Because it is timid, once it becomes wary, it is 
reluctant to poke its head out of its hole. The unfortunate thing is that if it 
remains cowering in the hole for too long, it might starve to death without even 
realizing it.

チンアナゴが砂から身体を出している様子が数字の「１」に似ていることから、11月11日は”チンアナゴの日”に認定されている。八幡野でのダイビングで見かけたが、ちょっとした変化で直ぐに引っ込んでしまうので、近づくのは極めて難しい。
November 11th is designated as "Spotted Garden Eel Day" because its sight 
emerging from the sand resembles the number "1." I could observe it while 
diving at Yawatano, but it immediately retreats into its hole at the slightest 
change, making it extremely difficult to get close to it.
”アマゾンツノガエル”　”Amazonian horned frog”

大人の掌よりも大きく、オスよりもメスの方が大きい。食欲旺盛で、目に入ったものは片っ端から食いつき、丸飲みにしてしまう。だが、獲物が大き過ぎて飲み込めず、咥えたまま死んでいる個体が多数発見されているのが、まず一つ目の残念な所である。
It is larger than an adult's palm, and the female is larger than the male. It has a huge appetite and gobbles up anything it sees, swallowing it whole. However, 
one unfortunate aspect is that many individuals have been found dead with prey still in its mouth—having been unable to swallow it because it was too large.

チャームポイントは目の上に飛び出ている小さな角だが、実はこれ、”瞼”である。瞬きは、目の下方の”瞬膜”と呼ばれる薄い膜が上に動いて行う。角のような瞼の役割は解明されておらず、必要なのかどうか大いに疑問が残るところが、二つ目の残念な所である。
Its most charming feature is the small horns that protrude above its eyes, but 
these are actually its eyelids. Blinking is performd by the upward movement of a thin membrane called the "nictitating membrane" located below the eye. The 
second disappointing aspect is that the function of the horn-like eyelids remains unexplained, leaving serious doubts as to whether they are even necessary.
