Although I visited Kinomiya Shrine on New Year's Day, it was during the late
hours of the night, spanning from the 1st to the 2nd.Therefore, the bustle of
New Year's visit to a shrine by the crowds had already disappeared, the box
containing the "Big Camphor Tree Fortune Slip," which was my goal, had been
removed, so I was unable to draw one.
A snowy Kinomiya Shrine presented a golden opportunity to me. I decided to take the opportunity to draw a fortune slip and admire the snow-covered
grounds of the shrine, so I carefully climbed the steep, snow-covered slope,
where only the black tire tracks were visible.
The vermilion torii gate was hidden by snow-covered trees. Given that Atami is full of hills and the footing was poor, it's no surprise that there were few people
there.
I'm a true soccer fanatic, having played since first grade of elementary school.
This year, the FIFA World Cup will be held from June to July, which will be a
multinational event involving Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
In front of the main shrine building, a dignified guardian lion-dog, holding a kemari (traditional Japanese ball) with its left foot, protected the main deity.
The Japanese national team had an abundance of talented and experienced players for this World Cup, so it seemed they could achieve results that
exceeded expectations. However, recently, several key players have been
injured. Hmm, I wonder what will happen.
There are actually three hearts hidden within Kinomiya Shrine. This time, one of them was a "white heart."
I entered the bamboo grove that leaded to the large camphor tree in the back. When it comes to bamboo forests in Japan, Arashiyama in Kyoto is probably
the first place that comes to mind. Compared to that, this one may seem less
impressive in scale. But its narrowness actually creates an atmosphere of a
secret passage. I walked through the bamboo-covered path with growing my
anticipation, because I imagined that a giant camphor tree, over 2,000 years
old, might be covered in snow ahead.
There are two big camphor trees at Kinomiya Shrine.trunk, which is about 2-3 meters tall from the ground. Only a thin layer of bark
remains on the outside and supports the massive tree. Though it may be a
heartbreaking sight for visitors, it is still alive and well. Countless green leaves
grew overhead.
The second large camphor tree standing behind the main shrine is the first
sacred tree of Kinomiya Shrine. In front of it, I could finally draw the fortune slip I've been longing for, "The Words of the Great Camphor Tree."
The content of the fortune slip I drew remained essentially the same meaning, "Strive diligently every day! Then your wishes will come true!", although the wording had changed from previous ones.
In the garden where the cafe is located, there is a three-dimensional sign of
"Kinomiya no Mori (Kinomiya Forest)" with a large camphor tree in the
background. A selfie stand with a self-timer was set up so that people could
take pictures of themselves with the large camphor tree and the sign together.
The view from the counter seats attached to this cafe is the movie of the main hall which I show above.

After I saw the snow-covered cherry blossoms and visited at snowy Kinomiya
Shrine, the only thing left to see for me was the snow-covered plum blossoms. I passed in front of Kinomiya Station and continued up the hill, heading towards
Atami Plum Garden.
Just before reaching the plum orchard, the road crossing the mountain pass
was already closed to traffic.
