初島は、どのようにできたのだろうか。実は、火山である他の伊豆諸島とは違い、ここは海底が隆起してできた島である。海底の隆起と海水の浸食によって形成された、専門的な用語では海成段丘と呼称されるそうである。
以前に紹介させていただいた初島灯台は、島の最高地点、海抜約５０ｍの第１段丘に建っている。これまでの地質学的な調査では、ここは２万年ほど前に、隆起した海底が姿を現したとされている。
How was Hatsushima made? Actually, here is the island made by rising the seabed, different from the other islands of Izu. It was formed by uplift of seabed and erosion by sea water. It seems to be called "Kaiseidankyu (Terraces formed by the sea)" in technical term.
"Hatsushima lighthouse" which I introduced before was constructed at the top of this island, the first terrace about 50m above the sea level. According to the previous geological surveys, the rising seabed appeared the shape about 20,000 years ago.
初木神社の社殿の下に古墳時代の磐倉がある、と記事に記した。だが、実は遥か太古の縄文時代早期後葉、約７０００年前から住人がいたようで、全域で当時の遺跡が散見されるようである。遺跡からは、黒曜石が出土している。その時代、黒曜石を産出できたのは神津島や長野の霧ケ峰など、広域に渡っていたそうで、孤島でありながら幅広い交易があったことを示している。大昔の人々の生活の一端が垣間見えるのではなかろうか。
I wrote in my article that there is "Iwakura" of "Kofun Period (from the late 3 century to 7 century)" under the main hall of "Hatsuki Shrine". However, it seemed that people lived in this island at the far ancient time, so-called "early Jomon period" which was about 7000 years ago. The remains from that time can be found here and there throughout this area. The obsidian has been unearthed from the remains. The obsidian could be yielded at "Kouzu Island" which is one of Izu Islands and "Kirigamine" in Nagano Prefecture. This fact shows that people in this island traded with the wide range of regions despite that it was an isolated island at the period. I think that we can get a glimpse of the lives of people in the ancient times.
さて、初木神社に参拝して民宿街を通り過ぎると、島内唯一の御寺である東明寺に出会う。港から坂を少し上がってすぐの、初島の小・中学校の隣にある。
入り口の脇には、複数の石像が並んで鎮座している。６体のお地蔵さんと、胡坐を組んで座っているのが延命地蔵、胸に鳥を抱えた姿で屹立しているのが子安観音だそうである。
By the way, after I visited "Hatsuki Shrine" and passed by the guesthouse town, I saw "Toumyou Temple" which is only one temple in this island. It is located next to elementary and junior high school of Hatsushima.
Many stone statues arranged and sat down at the side of entrance. It seemed that 6 Jizo stood, "Enmei Jizo (Jizo who wish the life extension)" sat with crossed legs and "Koyasu Kannon (the goddess who protecting the safe delivery of pregnant women and the safe growth of infants in Buddhism) stood with holding a bird on her chest.
本尊が薬師如来の、曹洞宗のお寺らしい。その薬師如来像は、室町時代末期のものだと云われている。門前に並ぶ石像も、生命の大切さを表すものばかりである。初島では、唯一の寺院である。
The principal image is "Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha)", and here is "Soto sect temple". It is said that the statue of "Yakushi Nyorai" was made at "the late Muromachi period". All stone statues which lined up at the side of the gate represent the importance of life. This is only one temple in Hatsushima.
島内では大概どこでも拝見できるのだが、ここの境内にも、立派な南国の樹木が林立している。その向こうに並ぶ墓石は、戦没者を弔うお墓だそうである。
The magnificent tropical trees also stood densely in this precinct though we can see them everywhere in this island. It is said that the tombstones which are lined up at the back place are the graves to mourn the war dead.
