毎年川奈港では、４月の初旬になると、小室山からいただいてきた樹木を海底に沈める。葉の茂った樹々は、影が多いので、アオリイカたちの格好の産卵床となるからである。昨年と同様、今年も幸い、その日に立ち会うことができた。
馴染のインストラクターに工程を訪ねると、まずは川奈の漁師さんが船で運んで、樹木を落としてくれるらしい。岸に近いところはダイバー用で、もう少し沖には漁師さんたちが何かの目的で、何カ所か沈めているとのことであった。その後で、川奈のダイバーさんたちが総出で潜って、適所まで引き摺って運んでいくらしい。
Many trees were annually sunk into the sea at the beginning of April in Kawana. They become the spawning beds for the bigfin reef squid as they have a lot of
bunches and shadows. Fortunately, I could see the scene to sink them not only
last year but also this year.
I asked the familiar instructor about the process, and he answered that the
fishermen carry the trees by a ship and drop off them at first. Some near the
shore are for the divers, other far from the shore are for the fishermen. But the
instructor didn't know why the fishermen drop the trees at the offing. After that,
the divers of Kawana dive into the place and drug them to the correct spots.
折角なので、昨年の樹々がまだ残っている古い場面と、新たな樹木を沈めた後のこれからの光景を眺めさせてもらった。たった数十分で、立派な産卵床が完成していた。
アオリイカが産卵に訪れるのは、おおよそ６月に入る頃くらいからである。どの生物にも共通することであろうが、産卵時には気性が荒くなる。我々はその貴重な様子を観察させてもらうのだが、気の立った大きな雄が、時折１０本の足を大きく開いて威嚇してくることがある。近づくな！！と、心で怒鳴っているのだろう。

the feet widely. I thought he shouted "don't come here!!" in his mind.
繁った葉の裏の細い枝に、インゲンのような形をした半透明の白い綺麗な卵が、何房も垂れ下がる。何週間かすると、赤ん坊の小さな黒い目玉が観察されるようになるというのだが、昨年は拝見できなかった。今年こそは、と思っている。
こんなに立派な産卵床が、３カ所に出来上がったのである。今年も、多くのアオリイカに産卵に訪れてほしい。

Many bunches of eggs are hung at the thin branches behind the leaf which
grows thick. The shape of egg looks like the kidney bean, and the color is
semitransparent and white. Very beautiful! We can observe the little black eyes of baby in the eggs after a few weeks. I couldn't see them last year. I expect this year.
Such three splendid spawning beds were completed. I hope that many bigfin
reef squid come here to spawn this year too.
