愈々、夏に入った。サンビーチは既に潜ったので、早速初島へ出向いてきた。
出航は、いつも通りの熱海港からである。夏休みに入ったからか、チケットの購入に時間がかかった。乗船すると、すぐに開けた屋上デッキへと、階段を駆け上がる。炎天下ではあるものの、海風が心地良い。乗船用の岸との簡易通路が外され、エンジンが唸りを上げる。出発を知らせる汽笛が一つ、響き渡った。
何度も経験してはいるものの、この瞬間には、やはり胸が高鳴る。

お馴染みの船上の風景である。乗船客が、お菓子のかっぱえびせんを手に、頭上高く掲げる。すると、カモメが巧みに飛翔して、それを直接、嘴で啄みに来る。幾つもの手が上がっているが、その中から自分の手を選んでカモメが食べてくれたことには、細やかな喜びと感動があるだろう。

今回は、まずは岩場に向かう。だが、風が強いせいであろう。結構波が高かった。

また、時折意外な魚種が迷い込んで来たり、魚群も警戒心が薄いので、すぐ傍に群れてくれる。動画を御参照いただければ御理解いただけると思うが、ソラスズメダイなど、何を思ったのか、急に顔に触れるほどにまで近づいてきてくれる。海の生物観察を主体にしたい大人でも、きっと存分に楽しめると思われる。

再び岩場に戻ってみたものの、あまりに波が荒れていて、危機感を感じた。とりあえず海に入ってはみたものの、相変わらず生物も少ないようであるし、さすがにちょっと怖いので、すぐに引き返してしまった。

そこで、再び港へと場所を変える。
港の中央には小さな突堤が伸びていて、子供たちがスリル満点に飛び込んでいる。お父さんに手を引かれた怖がるお母さんが、子供たちに「大丈夫！怖くないよ！」と海から嗾けられている。
海中には、海中の事情がある。それについて、我々はほとんど窺い知ることができない。そのため今回は残念な結果になるか、と半ば諦めていたのだが、ようやく最後の機会で、今回の最重要目的であるアオリイカの赤ちゃんに出会うことができた。今年も元気に生まれてくれていた。また今度、どこか別の場所で、さらに成長した姿に再会できるのを楽しみにしたい。

finally I could see the babies of the bigfin squids at the last diving, which was
the most important aim for me. I realized that they were born again and very
fine this year too. I’m looking forward to seeing them again someday,
somewhere else. At the time, they would grow up bigger.
