川奈祭り① 三島神社 ２０２４．１０．２０ Kawana Festival① Mishima Shrine

スキューバでよく訪れる川奈で、１０月の半ばに街を上げてのお祭りが開催されると伺った。そこで日程を調整し、拝見してきた。

川奈は、昔からの漁師町である。熱海にもまだまだ残っているが、道幅の狭い急な坂道や階段が、民家の間を縫うように町中に張り巡らされている。

当日は晴天、悪くても曇りの予報であったのだが、風も強いこともあり、相当荒れていた。スキューバの際には穏やかな川奈しか見ておらず、潜れない日には川奈を見ずに別の場所に移動する。荒れ狂う川奈を見るのは初めてであった。

seen only the calm sea at Kawana when I enjoyed scuba diving. It was the first
time that I saw the severe condition.
町民のほとんどが海に関わる職業を生業としている。また、生活そのものが海と直結しているため、例祭自体も海との繋がりが深い。祭りを担うのは、地元の漁師さんたちである。”川奈の万灯祭り”と呼ばれることが多いが、正式には”川奈三島神社例大祭”である。300年以上の歴史を誇っている。
主催は、川奈港にほど近い三島神社である。小さな社殿は漁の安全を見守るかのように、眼下に港周辺を一望できる高台に建てられている。

themselves are connected with the sea, the festival had a deep connection with the sea. The fishermen were in charge of the festival. It is often called “Mantou Festival in Kawana” in public. But officially, it is “Kawana Mishima Shrine Annual Festival”. This festival has the great history of over 300 years.

watching the safety of fishing.
三島神社は、三島大社の分社である。源頼朝が伊豆に流刑の身となった際、三島大社に今後の武運を祈願した。願い事が成就した暁には、その恩義として17の三島神社を建立すると約束したらしい。その一つが、この川奈の三嶋神社である。1179年に頼朝の命を受け、村民らによる建設が始まった。
ネット上の写真を見ていると、木造の立派な社殿が映っている。実際に眼にしたものとは姿が全く違うので調べてみたところ、2019年9月の台風15号の影響により、境内舎が損壊したため、再建されたそうである。あの台風では千葉県市原市にあるゴルフの打ちっ放しのポールが倒れ、近隣の民家が多大な被害を受けたニュースをよく目にしたのではなかろうか。ここ、三嶋神社もその例に漏れず、被害を被った。現社殿は令和3年の2月に竣工となったらしく、まだ新しい。

Mishima Shrine is a branch of Mishima Taisha. “Yoritomo Minamoto” prayed the future military fortune at Mishima Taisha when he was exiled to Izu region. It is
said that he promised to construct 17 Mishima Shrine for the benefit when his
wish came true. This shrine in Kawana is one of them. The villagers received
the order from Yoritomo and begin to make it in 1179.
I was surprised when I saw the photo of the shrine because the main hall on the photo was a splendid wooden shrine. The real shape which I saw directly was

very different. So I investigated the reason. The current shrine was
reconstructed because the old one was destroyed by the heavy impact of
Typhoon No. 15 in September 2019. Maybe, you would watch some news
about the great damages of a golf driving range in Chiba Prefecture and a
traditional hotel in Atami by the typhoon at the time. It was same with Mishima
Shrine. It was completed in February 2021, therefore, still new.
この境内から神輿が1基、万灯が3本、町に出て練り歩き、一日掛けて社に戻ってくる。
One portable shrine and three “Mantou” were carried out from the precincts. It
took a whole day to parade through the town and then returned to the shrine.
境内に上がると、一匹の狛犬が懸命にお祭りで使う白布を清めていた。珍しい手水鉢である。実に健気で、愛らしい。これは、担ぎ手が神輿と自身の体を離さず、安定した位置を維持するために使用していた。

purifying the white clothes which were used in the festival. This stone bowl for
purifying was very rare. The attitude was very innocent, therefore, adorable.
The carrying men used the clothes to maintain their stable position from the
portable shrine.
驟雨になる。だが、神輿が始まった。まず神前に感謝の意を示すため、大きく上下させる。すると、あまりの勇ましさにアクシデント、神輿塔頂の鳳凰が外れてしまった。それを直して再開し、狭い境内の中、重たい神輿を振ったり回したりしながら練り歩く。親しいインストラクターが担いでいる。その険しい表情に、思わずこちらも力が入る。

神社の下では山車が三台待機していて、それぞれの町の万灯の後についていく。山車には子供たちが乗っており、太鼓や手のひらサイズの鉦を叩いてお囃子を奏でている。また、大人に付き添われて山車を引っ張る子供もいた。
重たい神輿を、境内から町へと降ろしていくのだが、この階段が非常に急なので難儀していた。
Three floats were waiting under the shrine. They followed “Mantou” of each town. Children got on the floats and played some unique music by beating
drums and palm-sized gongs. Other children pulled the floats accompanied by
adults.
